Merch by Amazon launches in Europe: Ecommerce News reports that Amazon has launched its online print-on-demand platform, Merch by Amazon in Europe. The service is now available in Germany and the UK. The launch in Europe follows three years after Amazon introduced the platform in the US. Amazon says “We are excited to announce that Merch by Amazon is live in Germany and the United Kingdom… We will enable accounts on a rolling basis and will notify content creators when their accounts have been approved. When an account is enabled for these new marketplaces, options to select them will become available in the product creation process.” Continue reading…

Apple is first public company worth $1 trillion: BBC News reports that Apple has become the world’s first public company to be worth $1 trillion (£767 bn). The iPhone maker’s market value reached the figure in New York on Thursday and its shares closed at a new record high of $207.39. The stock has been rising since Tuesday when it reported better than expected results for the three months to June. Apple beat Silicon Valley rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft to become the first to hit the $1 trillion valuation. Continue reading…

This is Jeff Bezos’ three question test for new Amazon employees: Ali Montag at CNBC reports that to ensure that the company would retain high standards as it grew, Bezos outlined a simple, three-question test for hiring new employees in his 1998 letter to shareholders, a year after the online bookseller went public. “It would be impossible to produce results in an environment as dynamic as the Internet without extraordinary people,” Bezos wrote of Amazon’s workforce, which in three years had ballooned to 2,100 people. “Setting the bar high in our approach to hiring has been, and will continue to be, the single most important element of Amazon’s success.” Continue reading…

Amazon’s the biggest in online shopping but not always the best: Matthew Boyle at Bloomberg says that Amazon’s dominance in online retail is clear to see: The so-called Everything Store captures 49 percent of retail ecommerce sales in the U.S., thanks in large part to its 95 million-strong army of Prime customers, who in July contributed to an estimated $4 billion spent globally in just 36 hours during a promotional binge that Jeff Bezos created out of thin air. Amazon plans to move completely off Oracle software by early 2020: Jordan Novet at CNBC reports that Amazon’s emergence as a major provider of data centre technology has turned many of its long-time suppliers, including Oracle, into heated rivals. Now Amazon is dealing yet another blow to Oracle. The ecommerce giant having already moved much of its infrastructure internally to Amazon Web Services, plans to be completely off Oracle’s proprietary database software by the first quarter of 2020, according to people familiar with the matter.
