Is Amazon preparing to accept payments in Bitcoin? Sky News reports that Amazon may be set to announce that it will be accepting Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies on its ecommerce platform. Amazon has registered three new domains related to cryptocurrency, prompting speculation it may be about to announce a move into the sector. Amazon has slashed seller fees to try to improve its grocery selection online: Jason Del Rey at Recode reports that Amazon recently told businesses that sell non-perishable grocery items on Amazon.com that it was lowering the fee it charges them on items priced at $15 or less. Amazon previously charged 15 percent on all grocery items, but will now charge only 8 percent on the lower-priced goods for at least the next year. Continue reading…
Amazon now employs a whopping 542,000 people and plans to hire thousands more: Julie Bort at Business Insider UK reports that it’s hard to imagine a company that already employed 382,400 people could grow its headcount 77% in just three months. But that’s exactly what Amazon did. At the end of September, the ecommerce giant employed 541,900 people, up 159,500 from the end of June. Continue reading…
BBC director general warns of £500m “threat” to British TV from Netflix and Amazon: Ben Dowell at The Radio Times reports that the rise of on demand giants like Netflix and Amazon is threatening the future of British programmes such as Sherlock and Doctor Who. Tony Hall is due to give a speech in Liverpool warning of the “serious threat” due to changes taking place in the industry as the rise of Netflix, Amazon and Apple threaten a dramatic fall in investment in home-grown television.
