Alibaba smashes Singles’ Day records with 39% sales lift: Chris Dawson at Tamebay reports that Alibaba‘s Singles’ Day records have been smashed yet again with a massive $25.3 billion of merchandise being sold. That’s 39% above the 2016 Singles’ Day sales total of $17.8 billion which was eclipsed after just 13 hours and nine minutes into the shopping extravaganza. Total GMV of $25.3 billion was generated by 812 million orders up 23% from last year.

Amazon will become a $1 trillion giant in 2018: Shona Ghosh at Business Insider UK reports that Amazon could be worth $1 trillion (£763 billion) by the end of 2018, according to a bullish calculation by Morgan Stanley. The bank also predicted the firm could hit a $2,000 (£1,526) share price in the next 12 months. The major reason: Amazon has built several fast-growing businesses on top of its core, massive retail business. Specifically, there’s Amazon Web Services, advertising and Prime subscriptions. How Bombas steps up and handles a 1,633% spike in orders: Digital Commerce 360 reports that a five-minute segment on the TV show “Good Morning America” resulted in about 16 times the typical number of orders for ecommerce sock retailer Bombas. Bombas typically handles 1,500 to 2,000 orders a day, but that number spiked to 26,000 on the day of the morning show segment, says Drew Morrison, operations manager at Bombas. Bombas generated $17 million in online sales in 2016, which was a 400% increase compared to 2015. Continue reading…

Amazon delivery price rise shock ahead of Black Friday sales and customers aren’t happy: David Snelling at The Express reports that Amazon has just changed its terms which means orders under £40 are now getting a £3.99 extra cost. Until now, Amazon didn’t charge for fast delivery as long as the value of the shopping basket was over £20. The same-day service, called Amazon Prime Now, is available as part of Amazon Prime memberships in certain parts of the UK. Continue reading…

Amazon announces Lord of the Rings TV adaptation: The Guardian reports that Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and the rest of Middle Earth are making the switch to the small screen after Amazon announced it has committed to a multi-series adaptation inspired by JRR Tolkien’s classic fantasy novels. The television adaptation will tell new stories based in the period preceding The Fellowship of the Ring, the novel that provided the basis for the first part of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy. A Lord of the Rings series had been rumoured, but on Monday the streaming service confirmed it had acquired rights to Tolkien’s work and would be pursuing the project with a potential spin-off.
