Amazon may sell its own diapers, using a new non-Amazon brand: Jason Del Rey at re/code reports that a year on since it pulled its own line of diapers just a few months after launch, Amazon is asking some of its customers if they’d buy a new brand of diapers, that doesn’t carry the Amazon name. A few weeks ago, Amazon emailed some customers a link to a market research survey about “the look and design of packaging of products that will possibly be sold on Amazon.” In the email, Amazon asked a host of questions about a new diaper brand called Mama Bear, as well as the design of packaging associated with it. Continue reading…

Amazon hires ex-M&S chief for clothing launch: Mark Kleinman at Sky News reports that a former head of Marks & Spencer’s (M&S) womenswear business is set to join Amazon as it targets the clothing industry in the next phase of its global expansion. Sky News reports Frances Russell, who left M&S last year, is being lined up to take a senior role in Amazon’s fashion business, the plans for which are said to include a major own-label product line. Such a launch would mark another area in which Jeff Bezos wants to challenge established bricks-and-mortar chains.

Amazon Echo climbs best seller list following Super Bowl ad: Tess Townsend at Inc. reports the virtual assistant microphone Echo has received a boost in popularity in the wake of their first ever Super Bowl advert featuring Alec Baldwin, Dan Marino, Missy Elliott and Jason Schwartzman. The Amazon Echo, was already high on the list before the commercial but has climbed to the No. 2 spot on Amazon’s list of electronics best sellers after more people have become aware of the multi-functional gadget, a sleek black cylinder that responds to voice commands. Continue reading…

Amazon acquires Indian payments processor Emvantage: Reuters via Business Insider reports that Amazon.com has announced this week that it has acquired Indian payments processor, Emvantage Payments Pvt Ltd, for an undisclosed sum. Emvantage’s employees will join Amazon’s India unit that will use the company’s technology on its ecommerce website. Amazon has been rapidly expanding into India’s fast growing ecommerce segment that is likely to grow to $220 billion by value of goods sold by 2025. The evidence is clear, Amazon is already after its next $400 billion opportunity: Eugene Kim at Business Insider UK reports that during Amazon’s most recent earnings call, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavky was quizzed about the chances of Amazon expanding its own shipping logistics services to other companies but failed to respond. Amazon is notoriously secretive about its future plans, so it’s not too surprising that Olsavsky skipped the analyst’s question. Continue reading…
