Amazon files patent to offer payment with a selfie: Hazel Sheffield at The Independent reports that according to a patent application spotted by Re/code, Amazon wants you to start paying for goods with a selfie. The payment method requires buyers to send two photos: one selfie and one in which they blink, smile or tilt their head to confirm that they are real and not a picture. Amazon already has a patent for technology to authenticate a person’s identity using photo or video, but not necessarily to complete a transaction. Amazon China now sells 10 million imported products: Dan Wilson at Tamebay reports that Amazon China now boasts an impressive import inventory, with over two million items added since February 2016. and the number of overseas products available in China is only set to grow. There’s a section on Amazon.cn called Haiwaigou and that means “imported goods”, with the aim to to make it easier for Chinese shoppers to buy from overseas. Continue reading…

Amazon and eBay to be held liable for VAT fraud by sellers: Simon Bowers at The Guardian reports that Amazon and eBay are to be held liable, in some cases, for VAT fraud committed by a growing number of overseas sellers using their marketplaces. The VAT fraud is costing Britain hundreds of millions of pounds a year in lost tax receipts. The Chancellor is giving tax inspectors new powers to warn high-risk overseas sellers active in the UK through eBay and Amazon. Continue reading…

FedEx: Amazon would have to spend ‘tens of billions’ to compete with us: Eugene Kim at Business Insider UK reports that FedEX is unconcerned about reports of Amazon building an in-house shipping network. FedEx Executive, VP Mike Glenn, told analysts that building a service that rivals FedEx would simply take too long and cost too much. He reassured that his partnership with Amazon remains strong and that large retailers have always had their own delivery network to serve their own shipping needs.  Continue reading…
